Dear Marco,
I would think that most "normal" science today conforms with option
"A."
However, you and others on this list may find it of interest to note that
much, if not most, of the research that has been conducted in the
psychology of mathematics education (and presumably in many other areas of
educational research as well), especially over the course of the past two
decades, conforms with option "B."
I believe that one of the main reasons that many educational researchers
(particularly those involved in qualitative research) have oriented
themselves towards option "B" is due to the influence of Jean Piaget and
his seminal work in child development and "genetic epistemology." He
considered himself to be "profoundly Kantian," and his project can readily
be seen as a sequence of ontogenetic studies of the Kantian forms and
categories.
Look forward to hearing the results of your poll.
